New Delhi,07,DEC,2025,(India Today News Ca):- IndiGo flight disruptions began around December 2, 2025, causing over 1,000 cancellations nationwide by December 5, mainly due to crew shortages from new regulations, technical issues, and weather.
Key Causes
New crew rostering rules implemented in phases since July limited pilot duty hours, leading to shortages that IndiGo struggled to manage unlike other airlines. Technical glitches and adverse weather compounded the issues, with pilots alleging the airline cut corners on rest requirements.
Affected Areas
Major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram saw hundreds of cancellations, including all Delhi domestic departures on December 5 until midnight. Passengers faced long queues, stranding, and inadequate facilities, prompting some to seek railway alternatives amid soaring costs.
Regulatory Response
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo’s CEO for lapses in planning and resource management. IndiGo plans to scale back operations from December 8 and expects full restoration by February 10, 2025, while seeking exemptions.
