Canada,28,FEB,2026,(India Today News CA):- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in India for a four‑day official visit aimed at resetting a strained relationship and deepening trade and strategic ties with New Delhi. This is Carney’s first trip to India since taking office after Justin Trudeau, and it comes amid efforts to move past the diplomatic row that followed Canada’s allegations of alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.
Why the visit matters
- India and Canada are seeking to revive and broaden their Strategic Partnership, covering trade, energy, technology and artificial intelligence, critical minerals, agriculture, education, and defence.
- Bilateral trade reached about 30.8 billion dollars in 2024, and both sides hope to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) within the next year.
Agenda and stops
- Carney arrived first in Mumbai on February 27, 2026, to meet business leaders and kick off economic and investment talks, before travelling to New Delhi for formal talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on March 2.
- Beyond trade and investment, the agenda includes discussions on regional security, Indo‑Pacific cooperation, and people‑to‑people ties, especially given India’s large diaspora in Canada
