Canada,07,DEC,2025,(India Today News CA):- The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) stated that 219 of its members at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) got notices, while the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada noted about 200 more at NRCan. Additional warnings went to 109 workers at the Public Service Commission of Canada, 92 at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, and 74 at the Department of Finance.
Government Reduction Plan
The Canadian government aims to shrink the federal public service by about 40,000 jobs from its 2023-24 peak of 368,000 positions, with around 10,000 already eliminated in the past year. This ties into Budget 2025’s goal to cut program spending and administration costs by $60 billion over five years through restructuring, workforce adjustments, and attrition. Plans include reducing 1,000 executive positions over two years and 20% of management/consulting spending over three years.
Union Concerns and Department Response
PSAC warned that NRCan cuts could weaken Canada’s energy and natural resource management. NRCan indicated these notices start a months-long process offering options like reassignment, early retirement, or external employment, prioritizing attrition to minimize impacts. A workforce adjustment process launches in January 2026, targeting savings by 2028-29 without confirming exact position reductions.
